The Broads

The Broads refers to the network of rivers and lakes that can be found within the English counties of Suffolk and Norfolk. Through the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act in 1988, the area referred to as The Broads as well as its surrounding lands were constituted as a special area. This special level of protection can be likened to a national park in the United States.

The Broads covers an area of around 117 square miles, mostly in Norfolk, with 120 miles of which are navigable. The ‘national park’ consists of seven rivers and 63 broads that are only less than 13 feet deep. While most of the broads are open to the public for navigation, some of them have restrictions during the autumn and winter seasons. The area has been a very popular boating holiday destination and small yachts were already available for hire starting in 1878. The authorities of the Broads are currently promoting sustainable boating to its visitors.
