The Victoria and Albert Museum, or the V&A Museum, is the largest museum in the entire world dedicated to the decorative arts and design. It was established in 1852 and was named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. At present, it has a collection of more than 2.2 million items displayed in an area of 12.5 acres across 145 galleries.
The ceramics, glass, textiles, silver, costumes, ironwork, furniture, jewellery, sculpture, prints, medieval objects and more span more than 5,000 years, from the ancient times to the present. The architecture of the museum itself is an interesting display with various influences including the Victorian, Edwardian and Post-War evident in many parts of the building. The V&A Museum is currently split into four Collections departments: Asia; Furniture, Textiles and Fashion; Scripture, Metalwork, Ceramics and Glass; and Word and Image. The Victoria and Albert Museum currently receives over 3.4 million visitors each year, making it the 5th most visited museum in the United Kingdom.
